Title: English Language Acquisition (ELA/ESL) Instructor

Reports to: Sr. Manager of Adult Education

Provides Supervision to: No supervisory roles

Status: Part time, hourly –  $26/hour

Mission of Focus Points Family Resource Center: To build better communities by strengthening families.

Scope of Organization: For almost 25 years, Focus Points has successfully worked to transform the lives of low-income families in Northeast Denver. Focus Points’ community-driven programs are aptly designed to address the myriad of challenges that our families face, helping them to move further along the pathway to self-resilience and fulfillment. The scope of our services is thus very broad, including early education, health and wellness, economic and workforce development, mental health support, basic needs assistance, public transportation, English Language Acquisition (ELA), and adult basic education.

Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field
  • Adult ELA/ESL teaching experience
  • Adult Basic Education Authorization (ABEA) required or must be obtained within 3 years of hire date

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Proficiency in English (Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing)
  • Skills in using Microsoft Office programs and internet-based computer programs required
  • Experience working with low-income immigrant families from diverse communities
  • Critical thinking skills to provide creative solutions to challenging, multi-faceted problems
  • Good organizational skills and a positive attitude

Responsibilities

  • Instruct assigned ESL class(es) for the duration of the scheduled semester
  • Arrive to class 15 minutes early, prepared for class
  • Provide life and work-skills based instruction for ELA classes utilizing appropriate ELA curriculum; use a variety of materials and teaching techniques to enhance learning and outcomes and to maintain learner interest. All lessons should adhere to College and Career Readiness Standards
  • Incorporate the use of technology into the curriculum and classroom instruction, as appropriate and available
  • Integrate civics education into the curriculum and classroom instruction, as appropriate
  • Provide all learners with a safe and appropriate learning environment; offer classroom accommodations and/or refer learners to Accessible Design Coordinator (Delta Donohue) as needed and appropriate
  • Accumulate professional development hours per semester and complete all forms and reports associated with CDE’s professional development requirements
  • Complete professional development self-assessment by required due date
  • Attend workshops, trainings and meetings as requested by the Senior Manager of Adult Education
  • Maintain learner attendance and submit attendance sheets weekly by noon on Fridays
  • Contact any learner that has missed more than 2 consecutive classes
  • Provide support in the registration, testing and retention of ELA/ESL learners. Obtain CASAS certification when possible.
  • Coordinate substitute when necessary; inform the Manager/Director with as much advance notice as possible
  • Keep the Manager/Director informed of all pertinent information
  • Submit timesheets for payroll before deadlines
  • Ensure classroom space is kept organized
  • Maintain a professional attitude and adhere to a high level of confidentiality towards Focus Points staff and participants
  • Maintain cooperative relationships and open communication with all staff, participants and off-site contacts
