June gives us so many reasons to\u00a0celebrate and come together. Throughout the month, we recognize\u00a0LGBTQ+\u00a0Pride Month<\/strong><\/a>, PTSD Awareness Month<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0Immigrant Heritage Month<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0y Juneteenth<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>on Friday, June 19 each reminding us of the strength, resilience, and diversity that make our communities so vibrant.<\/p>\n We’re also wishing all the dads and father figures in our lives a wonderful\u00a0Father’s Day<\/strong> on Sunday, June 21<\/strong>. We’ve gathered\u00a0a few\u00a0fun events around Denver<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0to celebrate with\u00a0you and your family to enjoy!<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Our Family Support Services (FSS) team is available to meet one-on-one with families.<\/p>\n Our current walk-in hours are:<\/strong><\/p>\n Wednesday: 9 a.m.-12:15 p.m. and 12:45-4 p.m.<\/p>\n Friday: 9 a.m.-noon Please note:<\/strong> Focus Points will be closed July 1-5<\/strong> in observance of the Fourth of July holiday.<\/p>\n We will resume walk-Ins on Wednesday, July 8.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Portable Air Conditioner Program<\/strong> Give a Backpack Program<\/strong> Join Our Community Advisory Committee<\/strong> Committee members provide valuable feedback, help identify community needs, and have opportunities to develop leadership skills. If you are interested, please email Mayra Avina, Associate Director of Strategic Initiatives, at mavina@focuspoints.org<\/strong><\/a> by June 26. In your email, tell us why you would like to join the committee and what excites you most about the opportunity.<\/p>\n Work Toward a Goal with Family Support Services<\/strong> To participate, you must be a parent or caregiver of a child age 17 or younger and work collaboratively with our team. Participants receive a $25 gift card after their initial meeting and a $50 gift card for each follow-up meeting completed 31 to 90 days later.<\/p>\n To learn more, call 303-292-0770<\/strong> and ask to speak with a member of our Family Support Services team.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Join us in welcoming\u00a0Edith, our new Community and Resource Navigator<\/strong> to the\u00a0Family Support Services team! While Jocelyn is on maternity leave, Jessica will be serving as our Older Adult Services Specialist and supporting our older adult community.<\/p>\n If you have questions about upcoming events, workshops, or any of our Older Adult Services programs, please reach out to Jessica at\u00a0Jessica@focuspoints.org.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Camila\u2019s journey began when she was in a HIPPY home visitation program with her mother Minerva, one of our educators.\u00a0About five years ago, through Arrupe Jesuit High School\u2019s corporate work study program, she joined the HIPPY home visitation team here at Focus Points\u00a0organizing educational materials and doing data entry. She has since taken on several roles across the organization, including as a\u00a0receptionist and recently as a data specialist with our Family Support Services, while earning her degree in Mathematics and Education.<\/p>\n Reflecting on her experiences, Camila says, \u201cI am extremely grateful for what I have learned and all the people I have met. The way Focus Points serves the community and has served me has been flexible for me and my studies.\u201d As a first-generation college graduate, she believes that \u201ceveryone is capable of achieving big things\u201d and that education can open doors to new opportunities.<\/p>\n This summer, Camila will teach in a pre-collegiate math program at the University of Colorado Boulder. In the fall, she will return to her alma mater, Arrupe Jesuit High School, as an Algebra I teacher. \u201cEducation is power,\u201d she says. \u201cI want students to know they are not alone and that there are people paving the path for them and cheering them on to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Focus Points is excited to offer a new self-service blood pressure monitor in our lobby<\/strong>, generously provided by the American Heart Association<\/strong><\/a>. This free resource\u00a0allows community members to check their blood pressure and heart rate. Simply take a seat, insert your arm into the cuff, and follow the on-screen instructions to receive your results in minutes.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n Focus Points\u2019 annual fundraiser,\u00a0Loter\u00eda, last Friday, May 29 at National Western Center. We hope many of you were able to join us!<\/p>\n The morning gave mothers an opportunity to connect with one another over breakfast and crafts were presentations about self-care and breast cancer awareness were offered. Afterward, many mothers shared how grateful they were for the chance to step away from their daily responsibilities, relax, and enjoy time for themselves while knowing their children were in good hands.<\/p>\n This past week, we\u00a0celebrated our PAT and HIPPY graduates. Families came together to recognize children who completed the PAT program for 3-year-olds and the HIPPY program for 5-year-olds. Through this program, qualifying families will be able to apply for an energy-efficient portable air conditioner.
