June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month with the Alzheimer’s Association.

Focus Points’ Family Support Services can work with you one-on-one to research resources that will help you to better understand how Alzheimer’s affects individuals and what services can help you and your loved ones to cope with someone who may suffer from Alzheimer’s and memory loss. Make an appointment with one of our FSS Specialists today!

To learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, please go to the Alzheimer’s Association and Healthline.

New Focus Points Walk-In Hours

Our Family Support Services (FSS) team is available to meet one-on-one with families. They can help you access resources for food (such as SNAP), electricity (Xcel) and other supports.

NOTE: There will be a pause this month in providing utilities assistance with Energy Outreach Colorado and will be available again on Monday, July 14.

Please note the NEW summer hours and dates including the time changes on Wednesdays:

  • Wednesdays, 9:00am-12:15pm and 12:45pm-4:00pm
  • Fridays, 9:00am-1:00pm

Our service specialists will be taking some much needed time for rest and regrouping as a team for professional development.

We will resume Appointments and Walk-Ins on Monday, July 14 with the new Wednesday and Friday Summer Hours listed above in the Newsletter.

How Can We Help You with WIC Benefits?

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) is a free program that helps families buy healthy food and get extra support. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have a child under 5 years old, you may qualify. WIC gives you a card to buy foods like milk, eggs, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and baby formula. WIC also offers nutrition tips, breastfeeding support, and referrals to other services.

You may qualify for WIC based on your income and family situation. If you already receive Medicaid, SNAP, or TANF, you automatically qualify. WIC is open to everyone—parents, grandparents, foster parents, and other caregivers can all apply. You do not need to be a U.S. citizen to get WIC.

At Focus Points, our Family Support Services specialists can help you to apply. Our center is a safe and welcoming place to get help with WIC and other services. After you apply, WIC will contact you within 10 days to schedule a short appointment. For your first visit to Focus Points and your later WIC appointment, please bring your ID, proof of address, and income information. WIC staff will explain how to use your card and answer any questions you have.

To learn more or apply, visit www.coloradowic.gov. You can also come to Focus Points to get help with the process. As one participant shared, “At first, I was uncomfortable about applying because I didn’t know if I was eligible. Focus Points helped me through the whole process—now my baby is getting everything they need, and I’m getting the support I need too.”

Huerta Urbana Farmers Market Season is Open!

Focus Points’ “pay what you can” Farmers’ Market season opened this past Friday, June 13! The market is open most Friday afternoons from 2:00pm-5:00pm. This is a great opportunity to get fresh, local fruit and vegetables grown on our Huerta Urbana farm, and by other vendors. You can get produce for free. Please see the full 2025 schedule from June through October.

If you came to our Market last year, you received a card at check-in with your information on it. You can use that same card again this year! Bring it Friday and skip the line! Please see the photo of a card below as an example.

Our Farmers’ Market accepts SNAP benefits. Just let one of our staff know at the check-in table that you wish to use them.

See you on June 13th!

Do you Know a Teen Looking for a Summer Job?

Focus Points’ Huerta Urbana program has two open summer positions for high school age and up. The positions will help with daily farm activities and support the Farmers’ Markets on Fridays. The pay is $18.81 per hour, and shifts are available Monday through Friday from 9AM to 5PM. These positions will run through the end of July with the option of extending. Both jobs require quite a bit of outdoor physical activity, so we’re looking for some young people ready to have fun with us in the sun!

For more information, please check out the position on our Join our Team page.
