Stories of Impact

Focus Points’ Adult Education staff have helped Shogufa adapt to her new community, and encouraged her to persevere through challenges.

Bashir and Shogufa are loving and proud parents of five beautiful children, as you can see from their smiling faces! Their family escaped the Taliban regime and settled in Denver last year—leaving behind their work, family and friends in Afghanistan. Bashir is working hard as a security guard to support his family financially, while Shogufa takes care of the home and the children. Shogufa started taking English lessons at Focus Points nine months ago, and has made a lot of progress. One of Shogufa’s favorite things about Focus Points is the family engagement programming offered to language students.

José used Focus Points' Adult Education program to gain confidence with his second language.

José grew up in a Spanish speaking home. Now a father, he knows that to support his children, he must take his English to the next level. José used to feel nervous talking on the phone and talking to his children’s teachers. Now, José feels more comfortable speaking English. When asked why learning English is so important to him, José says, “I want to learn more so that my children can be a little bit proud of me.” Your gift helps José and 400 students like him take the next step in their education.

Erika used Comal Heritage Food Incubator as a vehicle to launch her very own business.

Teresa participated with her grandson in Focus Points’ HIPPY program, where she learned to help Leonardo develop skills he would need for pre-school.

Teresa is a dedicated and loving grandmother of three young children, including Leonardo, and they live in the Elyria-Swansea neighborhood. She takes care of them during the day while their mom is at work. For Teresa, Focus Points has been a source of love and support as she helps bring up her grandchildren, and also care for herself and her whole family. "What I learned at Focus Points, I was able to share with my entire family. They are my community. I know I can rely on them when I need support.”

An underserved neighborhood with deep roots in Denver

Our main service area encompasses Globeville, Elyria and Swansea (GES). These neighborhoods are home to multigenerational homeowners and renters, mostly of Latin American descent. Some are recent immigrants, and some have been home owners for generations. We also serve immigrant and refugee populations who are making their new homes in Denver, Aurora and Adams County.
