Monthly Awareness

June gives us so many reasons to celebrate and come together. Throughout the month, we recognize LGBTQ+ Pride Month, PTSD Awareness MonthImmigrant Heritage Month and Juneteenth on Friday, June 19 each reminding us of the strength, resilience, and diversity that make our communities so vibrant.

We’re also wishing all the dads and father figures in our lives a wonderful Father’s Day on Sunday, June 21. We’ve gathered a few fun events around Denver to celebrate with you and your family to enjoy!

From Focus Points to the Classroom

Camila’s journey began when she was in a HIPPY home visitation program with her mother Minerva, one of our educators. About five years ago, through Arrupe Jesuit High School’s corporate work study program, she joined the HIPPY home visitation team here at Focus Points organizing educational materials and doing data entry. She has since taken on several roles across the organization, including as a receptionist and recently as a data specialist with our Family Support Services, while earning her degree in Mathematics and Education.

Reflecting on her experiences, Camila says, “I am extremely grateful for what I have learned and all the people I have met. The way Focus Points serves the community and has served me has been flexible for me and my studies.” As a first-generation college graduate, she believes that “everyone is capable of achieving big things” and that education can open doors to new opportunities.

This summer, Camila will teach in a pre-collegiate math program at the University of Colorado Boulder. In the fall, she will return to her alma mater, Arrupe Jesuit High School, as an Algebra I teacher. “Education is power,” she says. “I want students to know they are not alone and that there are people paving the path for them and cheering them on to succeed.”

New Blood Pressure Monitor in Lobby!

Focus Points is excited to offer a new self-service blood pressure monitor in our lobby, generously provided by the American Heart Association. This free resource allows community members to check their blood pressure and heart rate. Simply take a seat, insert your arm into the cuff, and follow the on-screen instructions to receive your results in minutes.

New Youth Summer Program and Youth Advisory Committee

The young people in our Youth Advisory Committee have spent the past several months meeting regularly, sharing ideas, and building meaningful connections with one another. Their excitement continues to grow as they prepare for Youth Ignite: Forging Connections in the Summer, which kicks off the week of July 6.

Registration opens June 5th to teens ages 11–18 outside the 80205 and 80216 zip codes. These youth-led programs offer a chance to build leadership skills, make new friends and explore future goals.

Mother’s Day Brunch and Graduation for PAT and HIPPY Programs

Last month, our Home Visitation team hosted a Mother’s Day Brunch for 157 mothers and their children participating in the PAT and HIPPY programs. We hope many of you were able to join us!

The morning gave mothers an opportunity to connect with one another over breakfast and crafts were presentations about self-care and breast cancer awareness were offered. Afterward, many mothers shared how grateful they were for the chance to step away from their daily responsibilities, relax, and enjoy time for themselves while knowing their children were in good hands.

This past week, we celebrated our PAT and HIPPY graduates. Families came together to recognize children who completed the PAT program for 3-year-olds and the HIPPY program for 5-year-olds. The Lilo & Stitch theme brought plenty of smiles, and we were honored to celebrate this important milestone alongside our families.
