Monthly Awareness
Fall into Good Health and Family Fun
Its October! There are so many wonderful seasonal activities that happen this time of year in Denver and Aurora. Whether you go “leaf peeping” in the mountains, pick a pumpkin at a local farm, enjoy some “tricks” and “treats” for Halloween, or celebrate Día de los Muertos, we hope you take part in some fun fall family time.
Focus Points also recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness Month and National Depression and Mental Health Screening Month this month. We encourage you and your family to prioritize your physical and mental health this month—by checking in with your healthcare providers and making time to strengthen family bonds, create lasting memories, and enjoy the many seasonal delights October has to offer.

Family Recipes Needed for
Home Visitation Cookbook!
Do you have a favorite recipe you wish to share? Our Home Visitation (PAT and HIPPY) programs are compiling a cookbook of our participants’ favorite family recipes! We plan to give out this cookbook to all of the PAT and HIPPY families at this year’s Winter Fiesta on Friday, December 5th as a special holiday present!
To submit your recipe, please include the following:
- the name of your recipe
- a list of all ingredients, including measurements if possible
- a step-by-step guide on how to prepare your dish
- the culture/country of origin this recipe comes from if applicable
- where you learned the recipe from (a family member, your favorite cooking show, etc.)
- is this dish best for appetizer, snack, breakfast, lunch, dinner, or dessert
- is this typically prepared for a special occasion (i.e. seasonal holiday or family milestone such as a birthday or wedding, etc.)
We would also welcome any photos of you and your family cooking or eating your special dish, please include these in your submissions.
Email all recipe information and photos to the Home Visitation program. The deadline to submit is: Friday, October 31.
PAT and HIPPY Enjoyed Fall Fun on
the Farm for their Group Connection!
On the afternoon of Thursday, October 9, our PAT and HIPPY families came together to enjoy a fall group connection out back on our Huerta Urbana farm! The weather was warm and inviting as families decorated pumpkins, created their own fall trees, ate home-made food brought by our educators, and picked fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs on the farm for recipes they received! Many of the children and parents came in costumes and it was a great harvest event for everyone!
Huerta Urbana Farmers’ Market
October is the final month of our “pay what you can” Farmers’ Market – open every Friday afternoon in October from 2:00pm-5:00pm until Friday, October 31*. This is a great opportunity to get fresh, local fruit and vegetables grown on our Huerta Urbana farm, and by other vendors.
*On the last day of the Market on Friday, October 31, come watch performers from the Athena Project!
NOTE: If you have any Booth Bucks left, please be sure to use them this month at the Market or return them to the registration table by October 31.
Don’t forget to bring your HUFM card for an easier check-in process when you come.
Denver children ages 0-5 can still receive a free bounty bag at our farm booth.
We also accept SNAP benefits. Just let one of our staff know at the check-in table that you wish to use them.
The Huerta Urbana program is a community powered resource for everyone, and a great direct way to support each other as neighbors. If you have experienced the relief and resource of this program, and want to ensure it continues, you can donate directly to the program with our Pay it Forward options as a way of giving back.
We want to hear from you! Please complete the following survey to help us improve our seasonal Market.
We hope to see you here!
