Honoring Ourselves and History

“I do know one thing about me: I don’t measure myself by others’ expectations or let others define my worth.”

— Sonia Sotomayor, first Hispanic U.S. Supreme Court Justice

“You don’t make progress by standing on the sidelines, whimpering and complaining. You make progress by implementing ideas.”

–Shirley Chisolm

March was Women’s History Month, a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and determination of women who have refused to let obstacles define them. At Focus Points, that spirit lives in every corner of our organization. From Lorraine Granado, the visionary activist and founder of the Cross Community Coalition that grew into what we know today as Focus Family Resource Center, to our current educators, specialists, and leaders who show up every day for our community, we are proud to celebrate the incredible women who make Focus Points what it is today.

Here’s to all of them!

April is Child Abuse Prevention Month, raising awareness about the importance of protecting children from abuse and neglect. It’s a time for communities, organizations, and individuals to come together, like ours, to promote safe, nurturing environments where children can thrive. This month emphasizes education, advocacy, and community action to strengthen families, support caregivers, and ensure every child has the opportunity for a healthy, happy future. This year’s theme is “Pinwheels of Possibility”.

To learn more, please visit Prevent Child Abuse America.

April is also a time to raise awareness and promote equity around culturally responsive ways to empower individuals in taking the next steps toward better health outcomes.

To learn more, you can visit National Minority Health Month, the CDC or Office of Minority Health.

Songs and Storytelling at March Group Connections for Home Visitation programs

This month, we were thrilled to welcome back Chufo from Denver Public Library for an afternoon of songs and storytelling with our families. He visited twice, first with our PAT families and then with our HIPPY families, and both events were well-attended. Everyone loved his enthusiastic blend of children’s and folk songs, stories, and books. We always look forward to having him at our center! Our educators also delighted families with a gardening-themed skit inspired by a book they have been reading with their students.
